A Town Revitalized Once Again Through Palm Fiber
Kainan City in Wakayama Prefecture is now known as a production center for household goods.
However, in ancient times, it prospered through shuro (palm fiber).
Even when we were small, walking through the town, we could see the scenery of shuro being dyed with natural dyes and hear the sound of machines winding shuro brushes, and we want to restore that original landscape once again.
The inspiration to create palm brooms came from a single comment by a business partner in Kyoto.
"Would it be possible to make brooms?"
There were no remaining craftsmen who could make traditional Kyoto fern brooms, and they were struggling with procurement.
While palm rope was our main business and broom making was entirely new to us, after a year of trial and error, we finally created fern brooms that met their procurement standards.
From there, we began crafting brooms using palm as well.
It takes time to master all the traditional techniques.
Years of accumulation create tradition, but if it cannot be passed down, it ends there.
We aim to make it a long-lasting tradition to provide easy-to-use and durable products while pursuing methods that make crafting more accessible.
To pass down palm brooms to future generations, there should be a way to connect them that works for today.
Our craftsmen are local mothers from the community.
By implementing a division of labor system in our processes, not only can techniques be mastered step by step, but we can also increase the number of craftsmen.
In product development, we incorporate the perspective of housewives who use these items daily, adding various improvements to make them more user-friendly and prevent bristles from falling out.
We craft palm brooms daily with heartfelt dedication and pride, creating pieces that accompany people in their everyday lives.
Through our palm brooms, we dream of the day when vitality will return to this town once again.
