The history of Shigaraki ware

It is said to have begun in the Kamakura period with the production of pottery such as jars, urns, and grinding bowls. Later, tea ceremony utensils were created during the Muromachi and Azuchi-Momoyama periods, and everyday vessels such as tea bowls and sake flasks were made during the Edo period. As a uniquely Japanese ceramic production area, it is counted among the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan.

Characteristics of Shigaraki ware

The "Bidoro glaze" formed by ash that falls and is fired at high temperatures for long periods, the "Hi-iro" (fire color) that develops a reddish-brown hue when iron content in the clay is fired, and the "Koge" (scorch) that turns blackish-brown as ash and clay body become carbonized, all express the distinctive "wabi" and "sabi" characteristics unique to Shigaraki pottery, creating a distinctive flavor.

Shigaraki Openware

The "Shigaraki Translucent Pottery" developed at the Shigaraki Ceramic Technology Research Center in 2009 is a ceramic that allows light to pass through. It uses optical fiber raw materials as its main component and is characterized by light transmission rates that are 2.5 to 3 times higher than porcelain, enabling light to pass through even when thick.

Shigaraki ware

Shigaraki pottery originates from Shigaraki, Koka City, Shiga Prefecture. The clay extracted from the geological stratum called the Kobiwako Group is well-suited for pottery making, and its origins are said to date back to the Kamakura period. The pottery that began with jars and earthenware vessels has evolved through the ages to encompass a wide variety of items including tea jars, braziers, and umbrella stands. Shigaraki pottery enriches and adorns our daily lives by creating ceramics that meet the needs of each era while preserving its traditions and distinctive characteristics.
