The history of Shigaraki ware

It is said to have originated in the Kamakura period with the creation of pottery such as jars, large vessels, and grinding bowls. Later, tea ceremony utensils were made during the Muromachi and Azuchi-Momoyama periods, and everyday items such as tea bowls and sake bottles were produced during the Edo period. As a uniquely Japanese ceramic production area, it is counted among the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan.

Characteristics of Shigaraki ware

The "Bidoro glaze" created when ash falls and is fired at high temperatures for extended periods, the "fire color" that develops into a reddish-brown hue when iron content in the clay is fired, and the "charring" that turns black-brown as ash and clay body carbonize together, all express the distinctive "wabi" and "sabi" aesthetics unique to Shigaraki pottery, creating its distinctive character and charm.

Shigaraki Openware

The "Shigaraki Translucent Ceramics" developed at the Shigaraki Ceramics Research Institute in 2009 is pottery that transmits light. It uses optical fiber raw materials as its main ingredient and is characterized by light transmission rates 2.5 to 3 times higher than porcelain, allowing light to pass through even when thick.

Shigaraki ware

Shigaraki pottery originates from Shigaraki, Koka City, Shiga Prefecture. The clay extracted from the geological stratum called the Kobiwako Group is well-suited for pottery making, and its beginnings are said to date back to the Kamakura period. Starting with jars and urns, the pottery has diversified over the flowing ages to include tea jars, braziers, umbrella stands, and many other items. Shigaraki pottery enriches and enhances our daily lives through pottery making that meets the needs of each era while preserving its traditions and characteristics.
